Prattville, Pike Road, Millbrook or Wetumpka? Choosing a town for your Maxwell PCS

By Shana Genenbacher · October 15, 2026 · 7 min read

When orders to Maxwell or Gunter come through, most families end up comparing the same four places: Prattville, Pike Road, Millbrook and Wetumpka. They're all within about half an hour of the base, and they all have houses in most price ranges. The differences show up in the commute, the school system, the kind of housing you'll find and how you'll spend a Saturday.

I've been an Air Force spouse for more than 21 years, and I've helped a lot of families make this call from another state or another country. This is the same rundown I give them on our first phone call.

Start with the gate, not the town

Maxwell and Gunter are separate installations a few miles apart. Maxwell sits on the Alabama River on the northwest side of Montgomery, and Gunter Annex is on the northeast side. Which one you report to changes the math more than anything else. Millbrook is usually the quickest drive to Maxwell and Wetumpka the quickest to Gunter, and each of those is the longest drive to the other base.

Millbrook15–20 min20–25 min
Pike Road20–30 min20–25 min
Wetumpka25–35 min15–20 min

Those are typical drive times. They change with the gate you use and the time you leave, and I-65 at 7:15 a.m. is a different road than it is at 10. Once you have a few addresses in mind, ask me for the rush-hour version and I'll tell you what it really looks like.

The four towns, in plain terms

Prattville: the most to do, with a real downtown

Prattville is the largest of the four, and the drive to Maxwell usually runs 15 to 25 minutes. It has established neighborhoods with mature trees alongside newer subdivisions on the edges of town, and a historic downtown built around the old Pratt gin mill on Autauga Creek. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill courses are here, and downtown fills up every October for the Parade of Pumpkins and again in December for Christmas in Prattville. The trade-off is Gunter: from Prattville it's the longest drive of the four.

Pike Road: newest, with its own school system

Pike Road is east of Montgomery, about 20 to 25 minutes from Gunter and a little longer to Maxwell. It opened its own city school system in 2015, a new high school campus opens in January 2027, and much of the housing is new construction in planned neighborhoods from builders like Stone Martin, Lowder, Holland Homes and D.R. Horton. If you want a house nobody has lived in, this is where you'll find the most choices. One thing to know before you fall for a listing: a Pike Road mailing address doesn't always mean the home is zoned for Pike Road Schools, so check the zoning for that exact address.

Millbrook: the quickest drive to Maxwell

Millbrook sits on I-65 just north of Montgomery. It's usually 15 to 20 minutes to Maxwell and not much more to Gunter, which makes it a practical choice for dual-military households or anyone who might move from one installation to the other. The Alabama Nature Center is on the edge of town, and the Millbrook Revelers put on what they bill as the largest Mardi Gras parade north of Mobile.

Wetumpka: river town, quickest to Gunter

Wetumpka is usually the shortest drive of the four to Gunter, about 15 to 20 minutes, and the longest to Maxwell at 25 to 35. What you get for the drive is a downtown on the Coosa River that HGTV picked for Home Town Takeover, a meteor impact crater you can tour during Crater Week, and Lake Jordan and Lake Martin within easy reach. Families who want more land or a boat in the driveway often end up here.

Schools: check the district, then the address

Four different school systems serve these towns. Pike Road has Pike Road Schools. Prattville is served mostly by Autauga County Schools. Millbrook and Wetumpka are mostly in Elmore County Schools. Homes near the edges of each town can be zoned differently, so the only reliable answer comes from the district's zoning lookup for a specific address.

All three districts have policies written for military families, and they're worth asking about. Autauga County Schools lets active-duty families choose any school in the district when space allows, and it has Military Family Life Counselors on several Prattville campuses. Elmore County Schools lets students with a military-affiliated parent attend any school in the district. Pike Road Schools has a designated military liaison. Policies change, so confirm the details with each district before you count on them.

I don't rank schools or tell families which ones are better. What I will do is send you the zoning for every house you're serious about, along with the district's own report card and contact info, so you can look at the numbers yourself and call with questions. If you have a child with an IEP or a 504 plan, ask the district about services before you choose a house. The school liaison office on base can help with that too.

New or established?

If your timeline is tight, an existing home or a new home that's already built (builders call these “spec” homes) is usually the safer bet. A build from scratch typically takes five to seven months here, which rarely lines up with a report date. If you have more time, or you're buying ahead of a move next year, new construction is worth a look. You'll want your own agent with you on the very first model home visit. I wrote more about that on the new construction page.

Budget from your BAH, not the listing price

Most families I work with start from their Basic Allowance for Housing and work backward to a monthly payment they're comfortable with. You can look up your rate on the DoD BAH calculator. A VA-approved lender can then tell you what that payment buys once taxes, insurance and any HOA dues are included. Property taxes in Alabama are low compared with most states, which stretches a BAH further than families from other bases expect. Ask your lender to show you the full monthly number before you start touring.

A few questions to answer before you look at houses

  • Which installation, and which gate, will you use most days?
  • How long do you expect to stay, and would you keep the house as a rental when you leave?
  • Do you need a yard, a shop or room for a boat or RV?
  • Are you open to new construction, and does your timeline allow for it?
  • Will you buy before you arrive, or rent first and look in person?

Those answers usually narrow four towns down to one or two, and from there it's about specific streets and specific houses. That's where it helps to have someone local on video with you, walking the neighborhood and telling you what the photos don't show.

Where to go from here

Each town has its own page with neighborhoods, things to do and the events worth putting on your calendar: Prattville, Pike Road, Millbrook and Wetumpka. The military relocation guide walks through the whole move from orders to keys.

If you'd rather just talk it through, call or text me at (334) 306-4520. Tell me your report date and which base, and I'll send you a short list of neighborhoods to start with.
