Living in Prattville

A creek-side mill town that grew into the River Region's biggest suburb, with a historic downtown and a full slate of shopping, golf and parks.

The short version

Prattville grew up around Daniel Pratt's cotton gin factory on Autauga Creek in the 1830s and 40s. The downtown historic district still covers about 15 blocks and more than 200 buildings, and the old gin factory on the Mill Pond now holds apartments. Artesian wells still flow in town.

Most newer neighborhoods are on the east and northeast side, close to I-65 and the Cobbs Ford Road shopping corridor. With about 40,000 residents, it's the largest of the four towns around Montgomery and the one where you're least likely to need to drive into the city for errands.

Getting around

I-65, US-82, AL-14 and Cobbs Ford Road. Usually 15–25 minutes to Maxwell's main gate and 25–35 minutes to Gunter, depending on where in town you start.

Schools

Most of Prattville is served by Autauga County Schools, which lets active-duty families choose any school in the district when space allows. The part of the city in Elmore County is served by Elmore County Schools. Check zoning for each address.

New construction

Stone Martin (Glennbrooke, Providence, McClain Landing), D.R. Horton and Goodwyn Building are all active, mostly on the east and north sides of town.

What's changing

Prattville keeps adding businesses along Cobbs Ford Road, and the planned PRATT history and STEM campus near the old gin factory is meant to give downtown another anchor.
