The short version
Wetumpka sits on the Coosa River, and its name is often translated from the Creek language as "rumbling water." The 1931 Bibb Graves Bridge leads into a walkable downtown along Company and Bridge Streets, the one HGTV picked for Home Town Takeover. Movies including Big Fish were filmed here.
The city limits are small, but many homes with a Wetumpka address are just outside them, in areas like Redland and Emerald Mountain where lots are bigger. Lake Jordan and Lake Martin are both close, so it's a natural fit if you want a boat in the driveway.
Getting around
US-231 and AL-14. Usually 15–20 minutes to Gunter, the shortest of the four towns, and 25–35 minutes to Maxwell.
Schools
Elmore County Schools: Wetumpka Elementary, Middle and High. In the Redland area, students attend Redland Elementary and Middle through 6th grade, then Wetumpka schools. Since 2025 the district has let students with a military-affiliated parent attend any school in the district.
New construction
Stone Martin (Coventry, Woodbridge), D.R. Horton (Laurel Ridge) and Goodwyn Building (The Cove) are building around Wetumpka and Redland.
